Overview

Explore the hidden beauty of the protected wetlands at Spanish Lagoon on this guided trail walk through lush mangroves and rich cultural history. You’ll follow a scenic path that winds through ancient Amerindian shell middens and the ruins of the old Balashi Gold Smelter—all before you arrive at the nesting ground of Aruba’s iconic Burrowing Owl (called “shoco”). Our expert guide will share intriguing stories and point out local flora and fauna along the way.

Experience Aruba beyond the beaches as you step into one of the island’s most peaceful and untouched natural areas. This guided walk offers the perfect balance of learning and adventure, allowing you to connect with the island’s past while observing its thriving wildlife up close. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply curious about Aruba’s hidden gems, this excursion offers a memorable blend of tranquility, discovery, and authentic island culture.

Meet 15 minutes before departure at the Telearuba Local Station parking area in Savaneta.

At Telearuba, you’ll receive a quick introduction to the team and an overview of the tour.

We begin by walking over the bridge with panoramic views of the Spanish Lagoon perfect spots for great vacation photos.

Along the trail, you’ll see one of seven archaeological shell middens, carbon dated between 1465–1280 BC.

We continue past one of Aruba’s oldest aloe farms before reconnecting with the trail.

Moving inland, the path takes you through the island’s only inland-water mangrove ecosystem, home to unique flora and fauna.

See the historic site where gold was once loaded onto barges over 100 years ago.

Near the end of the trail, we quietly visit the protected nesting area of the Shoco Aruba’s beloved burrowing owl and national symbol.

We then explore the well-preserved remains of the old Balashi Gold Smelter.

Finally, hear the legendary story of the haunted Frenchman’s Pass, located near the island’s natural headwaters.
